Tallahassee, Fla. - Senior Kirsten van de Ven and junior Katrin Schmidt were recognized as first team Scholar All-Americans as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and adidas. Florida State University joined the University of Texas as the only two schools to place a pair of student-athletes on the national scholar first team.

Van de Ven graduated this past fall with a degree in psychology. The native from Heesch, the Netherlands started and played in 26 games for the Seminoles in 2007. She finished fourth on the team in points with 18 collecting seven goals and four assists. Van de Ven set a career-high for goals and points in a game in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as she registered her first multi-goal game of her career scoring twice against LSU in a 4-0 FSU victory. The senior midfielder was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District second team and was a semifinalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in 2007.

Katrin Schmidt is majoring in international affairs as a junior.


Schmidt was one of six Seminole student-athletes to start all 27 games for FSU this past year. The junior defender, majoring in international affairs, was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District second team, while being selected to the ACC All-Tournament team in 2007. Schmidt has started 61 consecutive games since arriving in Tallahassee and has played in all 30 ACC regular season games in her career. She finished the season with a career-high 10 assists with four coming in the NCAA Tournament. The Schleiden, Germany native tallied three game-winning assists including two assists in back-to-back games in the 2007 NCAA Tournament against Texas and Connecticut.

Both van de Ven and Schmidt have honored by the ACC for their academic achievements throughout their career. Van de Ven was named to the 2006 All-ACC Academic Team and was a member of the ACC Honor Roll in 2006 and 2007. She also earned a spot on the President's List at Florida State earning a 4.0 GPA during the 2006 spring and fall semesters. Schmidt is a four-time member of the Dean's List at FSU. She was named to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2005 and 2006 and was recognized on the ACC Honor Roll in 2006 and 2007.

Van de Ven and Schmidt join India Trotter as Seminole recipients of this prestigious national award. Trotter earned Scholar All-America honors in 2005.
