Katrin Schmidt Earns National Team Of The Week Honors
Oct. 17, 2007
Tallahassee, Fla. - For the second week in a row, a Florida State student-athlete was recognized for their contributions on the field as junior Katrin Schmidt received both Soccer Buzz and Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week accolades. It marks the second time in her career that Schmidt has received a weekly honor by Soccer Buzz and the first of its kind by Top Drawer Soccer.
The defender from Schleiden, Germany was instrumental in leading the Seminoles to a perfect 2-0-0 week with a pair of shutout wins at home over Maryland and No. 7 Boston College. This is the third national accolade garnered by a Seminole student-athlete in 2007 as Schmidt joins Becky Edwards (Soccer Buzz National Team of the Week, October 1-7) and Mami Yamaguchi (Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, September 17-23).
Maryland and Boston College came to Tallahassee ranked in the top four in the ACC in shots per game at 20.36 and 17.91, respectively. Both teams were held to single-digit shots thanks to the outstanding effort turned in by the Seminole backline.
In Thursday's victory over Maryland, Schmidt notched the game-winning assist, her first of the season and third of her career. After dancing through the Maryland defense, she fed a nice ball to freshman Sanna Talonen inside the box who one-timed a shot from 10 yards out for the goal. It was Schmidt's fifth assist of the season. The junior defender was also at the start of many combination plays for the Seminoles in the win over the Terrapins.
On Sunday, Schmidt took two shots and nearly broke a scoreless tie in the 78th minute blasting a shot from 25 yards out. The ball beat the Boston College keeper but couldn't find the back of the net as it ricocheted off the crossbar. She was part of that defensive effort that limited the Eagles to seven shots on the afternoon including just one shot in the first half.
Florida State has now posted three consecutive shutouts, all coming in ACC play, while tallying a total of eight shutouts in 2007.
Schmidt and the Seminoles are back in action this weekend as they welcome Miami to Tallahassee for Senior Day on Sunday, October 21. It is the final regular season home game of the season with kick-off set for 1:00 pm at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
