CHICAGO, Ill.  – The No. 16-ranked Florida State men’s tennis was defeated by No. 3 Georgia 4-1 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, Ill.

“Georgia is a very good team and I think we are too which is why the match was so closely contested,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.  “This is a great experience for us and we just need to keep trying to get better and get ready for another tough match tomorrow.”

The doubles point came down to a tiebreaker on court number three between the Seminole duo of senior Chris Cloer and junior Vahid Mirzadeh and Javier Garrapiz and Drake Bernstein of Georgia.  The Bulldogs (6-0) pulled out the win 9-8(2) to take the doubles point.  On court one No. 23-ranked junior Jean-Yves Aubone and sophomore Clint Bowles were beaten quickly by No. 40-ranked Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt.  On court two the Seminoles fought back to tie doubles with No. 47-ranked senior Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut won the last three games of the match to defeat Josh Varela and Chrstian Vitulli 8-6.

“I thought that doubles was the key to the whole match,” Hultquist said.  “Drew and Maciek did a great job fighting back from a break down in their match and then Chris and Vahid were up a break on court three, but couldn’t hold on.”

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead with straight set victories on courts five and three.  Varela was first off the court with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Cloer.  Georgia earned its second singles victory when Garrapiz defeated No. 79 Sykut 6-4, 6-4.  The Seminoles (6-3) got on the board on court two where No. 29 Bowles defeated No. 35 Hunt 6-2, 6-3 to make the score 3-1.  Georgia clinched the match on court six where Vitulli upended Bailey in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

“Clint won quickly and played a great match,” Hultquist said.  “It was really close all the way around and Drew was actually up a break early in the third set, but ended up losing 6-4.”

Florida State will play the loser of the contest between No. 6 Southern California and No. 9 Mississippi in a consolation match on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  For live stats and a match recap log onto
