TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State freshman Chris Westerhof defeated Virginia's Stephen Nolan in the fourth single position to lead the Seminoles to a 4-3 victory over the Cavaliers at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. Florida State is ranked 45th and Virginia 21st in most recent ITA rankings. Westerhof also gained a team point for the Seminoles in double competition as Florida State won its second Atlantic Coast Conference match of the week and improved to 11-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Virginia is now 17-3 and 3-1in the ACC.
Florida State had to recover for the victory after dropping two of the three doubles matches played to begin the match. Westerhof teamed with Jeff Groslimond to defeat Virginia's Chris Goyner and Stephen Nolen, 8-3. Virginia won two of the three doubles points as Doug Stewart and Mike Duquette defeated Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub, 8-5 at the first doubles position and Rylan Rizza and Nick Montandon defeated Alex Herrara and Hagen Endler, 8-3.
Florida State then won four of the six doubles matches contested on the day. The Seminoles earned victories from Romain Jurd at the second position and Westerhof, Groslimond and Rodrigo Laub at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively. Jurd's victory over Rylan Rizza in the No. 2 position broke a 20-match winning streak for the Cavalier freshman.
Florida State returns to action as they travel to play at North Carolina Friday.
