TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State's Becky Edwards was named to the Soccer Buzz National Team of the Week for the first time in her career. The sophomore from Downingtown, Pa., was instrumental in leading the Seminoles to a 1-0-1 record on the week posting a tie against No. 3 Virginia and a win over Virginia Tech in Florida State's first conference road trip of the season. This is the second national accolade garnered by a Seminole student-athlete in 2007 as Edwards joins Mami Yamaguchi who was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, September 17-23.
Last week, Edwards helped steer Florida State's defensive effort which allowed just seven shots on goal combined in two games. She compiled 200 minutes of action on the week playing every minute in the Seminole backline. Edwards broke up several serves and through balls that otherwise could have led to key breakaways or shots on goal. Against Virginia Tech, Edwards and the Seminoles held the Hokies without a shot until the 33rd of action.
Against Virginia, the tie was the first for the Seminoles in Charlottesville snapping the Cavaliers' six-game winning streak over FSU inside the friendly confines of Klockner Stadium. The 1-0 win over Virginia Tech was the fifth shutout posted by the Seminoles this season and the first in ACC play. It was also the first one-goal victory of the season for the Seminoles in three previous chances.
Edwards and the Seminoles are back in action at home this week as they host a pair of ACC opponents at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Florida State welcomes Maryland to town on Thursday, October 11, while No. 4 Boston College visits Tallahassee on Sunday, October 14.
