TULSA, Okla. – In tennis it’s called a “lucky loser” and Florida State’s Clint Bowles was the luckiest of them all on Thursday, defeating two opponents at the D’Novo All-American Championships to advance to the round of 16. Bowles second victory of the day was against the No. 7-ranked player in the country.
After losing in the final round of qualifying on Wednesday, Bowles became the first alternate or “lucky loser” if someone pulled out of the tournament. When he arrived at the courts at 7:15 a.m. today he was notified that he would be playing.
“When I went to the front desk they said that I got in and play at 8:00 a.m.,” Bowles said. “It was tough to prepare because I had to rush to get everything ready.”
In the first round, Bowles upset Wake Forest’s 38th-ranked Steven Foreman in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the deciding third set Bowles broke Foreman early and held on to advance to the second round.
In his second match of the day, the Tampa, Fla., native upset seventh-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Bowles broke Kutrovsky’s serve three consecutive times in the third set, the last earning him the victory and a birth in the round of 16.
“Going into the match I wasn’t really expecting a lot,” Bowles said. “He’s top 10 in the country so I just went out there and stayed solid and was confident and believed in myself and played really well.”
Junior Jean-Yves Aubone also advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of decisive wins on day one. Aubone won his first round match in straight sets dispatching No. 44 Dominik Mueller from Baylor, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round the 13th-ranked All-American defeated Duke’s Reid Carleton, 6-2, 6-3, easily beating the 39th-ranked player.
In doubles action, the seventh-ranked pair of Bryan Koneicko and Justin Kronauge from Ohio State defeate Aubone and Bowles in the first round 8-3. Down 3-1, the Buckeyes won seven straight games to take control of the match.
