GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Florida State men's tennis team traveled to Gainesville, Fla. to take on the Miami Hurricanes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday May 10th. The match began at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Florida at 1:00 pm. After falling to the Hurricanes earlier in the season, the Tribe entered the match looking for revenge. The Seminoles, led by freshmen Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof, got what they were looking for as they knocked off their in-state rival, 4-2. With the win, Florida State improves to 15-10, while Miami falls to 13-8.

The Seminoles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Miami in doubles action, but could not hold on as the Hurricanes won the two remaining matches to claim the doubles point. Freshmen Groslimond and Westerhof defeated Luis Manrique and Fabrizio Rotati by a score of 8-4 at the No. 3 doubles position. In No. 1 doubles, Florida State's Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd allowed the Hurricanes to tie the score as Andrew Golub and Colin Purcell were victorious, 8-6. Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub, playing at the No. 2 position, defeated Todd Widom and Eric Hetchtman by a score of 8-6.

Florida State would not allow Miami to carry the momentum into singles play. The Seminoles came out of the break and claimed victory in three consecutive matches. Senior Laub finished first, as he defeated Chris Erikson of Miami in No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Playing at the No. 3 position, Florida State's Westerhof overpowered Manrique, 6-2, 6-2. In No. 5 singles, Groslimond knocked off Miami's Hetchtman by scores of 1-6, 6-1, 6-0.

The Hurricanes would not go away quietly, as ACC Player of the Year Cloer was defeated in No. 1 singles by Todd Widom of Miami, 6-4, 6-4. With the win, the 'Canes cut Florida State's lead to one.

In a tight match at the No. 2 position, junior Jurd clinched the match for the Seminoles as he outlasted Miami's Andrew Golub, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

The Seminoles will return to action Sunday, May 11th, at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Florida at 1:00 pm.
