The Florida State Lady Seminoles opened their first game of the 2001 season on the road in Malibu, Calif. at the Pepperdine Tournament. Florida State would begin their first match of the season with a win over Fresno State 3-2.

Both teams came out of the gate strong for the first match of the season with FSU winning the first game by a score of 32-30. The second game of the night would not be any easier as Fresno State would push the Lady 'Noles again to the last point with Florida State taking the win 37-35. With only one game left to secure the win the tribe would fall to the Bulldogs 33-31. With two determined teams it was clear that the match would not be an easy win for either school. Heading into the third game of the night Fresno State would once again come out on top by a score of 32-30, leaving the fifth and final match to hold all of the answers. By yet another wire-to-wire game it was the Lady Seminoles who would hold strong to take the win by a score of 18-16.

"This was one of the longest matches I have ever seen as a coach," said head coach Cecile Reynaud. "There was excitement during almost every minute of the match with each game coming right down to the wire. Tonight became a match of mental toughness and I am so proud of this team to stay strong throughout and take the win at the end."

Three of Florida State's five freshmen would see playing time tonight, with Kameelah Omar seeing playing time in all five games and finishing with 11 defensive digs. Senior standout Norisha Campbell would lead the team in kills (29) and service aces (4). Sophomore setter Jen Anderson also had a great night finishing with 66 set assists and 12 defensive digs. Junior Alex Sevillano would put 59 total attacks on the board for Florida State while leading the team in defensive digs with 17.

Florida State will now prepare for their next two matches of the Pepperdine Tournament to take place on Saturday, Sept. 1. The Lady 'Noles will first face Northern Arizona at noon P.T., before they face No. 17 host Pepperdine at 5:00 p.m. P.T.
