SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Crushing five home runs and driving in a season-high 18 runs, No. 1 Florida State (36-1-1, 16-0 ACC) earned an 18-9 win over Syracuse (19-13, 3-7 ACC) on Saturday afternoon in game one of the series. Senior Ellie Cooper led the team with five RBI, while redshirt senior Alex Powers and sophomore Carsyn Gordon each drove in four runs apiece.

The win is FSU’s 18th consecutive win in conference play and the 14th-straight road win for the Noles.

“Crazy game today, but I loved to see the fight from this team,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “We always talk about playing through adversity, and today we had plenty of it from the wind and cold and Syracuse putting a lot of balls in play. But at no point did our focus waver, nor did we lose trust in the person to our left and our right. A lot of positives from today, as well as a lot of things to work on, and it will be great to get after it again tomorrow.”

The Seminoles jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning as Dani Morgan lined a single to left and came in to score on an RBI double by Jessica Warren. After Sydney Broderick reached on a fielding error by the SU shortstop, Alex Powers launched her sixth home run of the season deep to right field for a 4-0 Seminole lead.

Syracuse battled back to tie the game in their half of the first inning as the first three batters got on base on a trio of singles to make it a 4-1 game before Meghan King recorded the first out of the inning with a strikeout of Faith Cain. An RBI on a single from Rachel Burkhardt and a two-run double from Hannah Dossett brought the game square after the first inning.

Warren led off the FSU third inning with her 12th home run of the season, putting the Noles on top 5-4.

FSU scored seven runs in the fourth inning to extend the Seminole lead to 12-4. Morgan Klaevemann drew a walk, stole second and ended up on third after a Syracuse throwing error and Morgan drove in her first run of the game with a triple to center. Warren was hit by a pitch and a single by Broderick drove in another run.

Powers reached base on an error and a fielder’s choice by Cali Harrod loaded the bases for Cooper with two outs. The Orange nearly got out of the inning with the score at 7-4, as Cooper popped into foul territory by third base, but the ball was dropped to continue her time at the plate. The senior made them pay with a grand slam to right, followed by a solo home run by Gordon to give FSU an eight-run lead after four innings.

Syracuse battled in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in three runs, but just one earned as FSU committed two errors in the inning to cut the lead to 12-7.

FSU added to their lead in the fifth as Klaevemann walked and Morgan hit her second RBI triple of the game. Powers made it 14-7 with an RBI groundout to the pitcher.

Syracuse scored a pair of runs in the fifth as Jessica Heese led off with a double and came in on a two-run home run by Alicia Hansen.

The Noles closed out the scoring with a four-run seventh, highlighted by Gordon’s second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left field. Broderick, Harrod and Cooper also singled in the inning.

FSU’s Cassidy Davis pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game, allowing a base hit and recording a strikeout.

King (17-0) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed 14 hits and nine runs with seven earned. She surrendered three walks and recorded seven strikeouts.

The Seminoles will wrap up their series with the Orange on Sunday with a doubleheader that will begin at 10 a.m. Admission is free for all games this weekend at Skytop Softball Stadium. Links for live stats, as well as the FSU softball radio stream, will be available on Seminoles.com.
