No. 3 Women's Golf Tops No. 6 Florida
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State junior Kim Metraux defeated Florida's Kelly Grassel in 22 holes to clinch a 3-2 match play victory for the No. 3 Seminoles over No. 6 Florida at Southwood Golf Club. Metraux and Grassel were tied after 18 holes and played four extra holes with Metraux gaining a par 5 and Grassel a 1-over par 6 on the final hole.
The match pitting the two rivals was the first time the Seminoles and Gators had met in match play since 2006 when Florida State recorded a 5-0 victory at the NGCA Match Play Championships.
“It's always exciting to beat the Gators,” said head coach Amy Bond. “But this event was more than that; it helped two good teams prepare for the postseason and that's what I am happiest about. Both teams can use this experience moving forward. I know we learned a lot and that's one of our goals each day we come out the course.”
Florida's Grassel rallied to take her match against Metraux into extra holes as she won the final two holes in regulation. Grassel played from behind over 14 of the final 16 holes before squaring the match as she won holes 17 and 18. The pair then played all square on the first three extra holes before Metraux clinched the match with a five as compared to Grassel's six on the fourth extra hole.
Florida took an early 1-0 lead in the match as Taylor Tomlinson defeated Florida State's Amanda Doherty, 6&4. The Seminoles quickly tied the match as senior All-American Matilda Castren defeated Florida's Karolina Vickova by a 4&3 score. Florida State earned its second win and a 2-1 advantage as Morgane Metraux defeated Maria Torres of Florida by a 2&1 score.
Two matches were all square after 18 holes and were decided, as was the team score, on extra holes.
Florida's Marta Perez San Martin defeated Florida State's Lydia Gumm in 19 holes to tie the team score at 2-2. Perez San Martin won her match against Gumm as she won the final hole in regulation and the first extra hole to gain the victory. Perez San Martin led for only three holes before coming from behind to take the win.
Kim Metraux then gained the deciding point to give the Seminoles the victory. Her victory over Grassel was the final match to be decided and earned the win for the Seminoles.
