Another Shutout For No. 1 FSU Over Notre Dame
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Recording a shutout for the 14th time this season, No. 1 Florida State (27-1-1, 8-0 ACC) posted a 6-0 win over Notre Dame (12-12, 1-4 ACC) on Saturday afternoon, matching the score from Friday night as the Seminoles earned series victory over the Irish.
FSU’s Jessica Burroughs (14-1) gave up just four hits and one walk in the complete game victory, recording 10 strikeouts. The redshirt senior pitcher entered the weekend ranked sixth in the NCAA in strikeouts and increased her season total to 134.
“Another solid day at the park,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “Jessica had the curveball moving today and our defense made some nice plays on some well-hit balls. Offensively, it took us a while to find our rhythm, but that is what we always talk about with trusting the process and playing pitch-by-pitch and at bat-by-at bat. The more you stay in it and compete and focus on the next one, instead of worrying about the last one, the more likely you are to see success. Now we’ll go back and make some adjustments to try and close out the series tomorrow.”
Florida State scored again in the first inning, doing so for the sixth time in the last seven games, taking an early 1-0 lead on an RBI triple by Jessica Warren. Dani Morgan reached on a hit-by-pitch and came in to score on Warren’s fourth triple of the season.
The Irish got their first baserunner on an infield single by Karley Wester in the top of the fourth inning. A single by Ali Wester and an intentional walk to Morgan Reed loaded the bases with one out. Burroughs got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
Klaevemann led off the Seminole fifth inning with a walk and Morgan followed with a single through the left side. Alex Powers made it 2-0 FSU with an RBI single back up the middle to score Klaevemann.
The Noles brought in two more runs in the sixth for the final 6-0 score. Klaevemann walked and stole second, but ended up on third after a Notre Dame throwing error. Morgan drove in her 17th RBI of the season on a single to left field. A walk to Powers was followed by an RBI single by Warren, her second RBI of the day.
ND’s Katie Beriont (2-5) took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Caitlyn Brooks allowed three runs in 1.1 innings with four hits and three walks, while Sara White pitched the final 0.2 innings for the Irish, allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
Florida State and Notre Dame will close out the series on Sunday, March 19 at 12:00 p.m. Game three will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, with live stats and a radio broadcast available on Seminoles.com. Admission is free for all regular season home games at JoAnne Graf Field.
There will be several road closures on the Florida State campus throughout the weekend on Chieftan Way and Champions Way. Fans are encouraged to arrive at the Seminole Softball Complex from the west on Stadium Drive and Spirit Way.
