TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Closing out the opening weekend with a victory, No. 3 Florida State (5-0) earned the championship of the 2017 Unconquered Invitational after a 7-0 win over Marshall (3-2) on Sunday afternoon at JoAnne Graf Field.

Alex Powers and Cali Harrod led the Noles with three hits apiece, as Harrod finished a single short of the cycle after hitting a double, triple and a home run, as well as two RBIs.

“I am really excited about the adjustments that we made throughout the weekend after going through so many different situations,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “We needed to see that we can be in tight games and make mistakes and be able to bounce back against quality teams like Marshall, Furman and Lipscomb.

“It is going to be a long season with a lot of ups and downs, but it was great to see so many players step up for their team. You may not have your best day, but you need to bring everything you have for when your teammate has their day, and vice versa. Glad to get these games under our belt and we are excited for FAMU this week and then the ACC/Big Ten Challenge this weekend.”

Marshall put the pressure on from the first pitch as its leadoff batter, Elicia D’Orazio, reached on a Seminole error and advanced to third with one out after a sacrifice bunt and a single. Seminole starting pitcher Jessica Burroughs got out of the inning unscathed after a pop out and a ground out.

Florida State got a runner to third in the second and third innings on a triple by Harrod and singles by Klaevemann and Powers, respectively, but neither would be able to come into score as Marshall’s Jordan Dixon escaped the threat each time.

Burroughs had a solid outing in the circle, giving up just two hits in 3.2 innings, without a walk and five strikeouts. She was replaced in the top of the fourth after a Seminole error allowed Marshall to get a runner to second base with two outs. Meghan King came on in relief and tossed three pitches, all strikes, to get the strikeout and end the inning.

In the FSU half of the fifth, Harrod’s solo home run opened the scoring and gave the Noles a 1-0 lead.

FSU plated three runs in the fifth to break the game open at 4-0. Jessica Warren led off with a single and Powers followed with a double. Carsyn Gordon drove them both in on a single up the middle, and she later scored on Harrod’s double to right center.

Another three-run inning for the Seminoles in the sixth inning was started by Dani Morgan after she was hit by a pitch. She moved to third on a ground out and a fly out, and following a walk to Powers, Zoe Casas hit an RBI infield single to make it 5-0 FSU.

Deja Bush entered to pinch run for Casas and after a walk to Gordon to load the bases, Ellie Cooper knocked a two-RBI single to center for the final tally of 7-0.

King (3-0) earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and zero walks with two strikeouts. Sophomore Tessa Daniels pitched the seventh for the Noles, retiring all three batters she faced, recording one strikeout in her first appearance of the season.

Marshall’s Dixon (3-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. Kailee Williamson tossed 1.0 inning of relief and gave up three runs on two hits with two walks.

The Noles remain at home this week and will play Florida A&M on February 15 at 6:00 p.m.
