TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – As the first team from the Atlantic Coast Conference to play in the annual AVCA Showcase, the 13th-ranked Florida State indoor volleyball team will face No. 7 Nebraska on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center before traveling to Ames, Iowa to play Iowa State at 1 p.m. (CT) on Aug. 31.
“It’s going to be great for the girls,” FSU head coach Chris Poole said. “They will have the opportunity to see how high we can go and what level we’re capable of playing on. We want to see under pressure how the girls are going to respond.”
The AVCA Showcase is an annual tournament that kicks off the season and features teams that are perennial powers of NCAA Division I Volleyball. Nebraska has been included in 10 showcases, including the first one back in 1995.
Florida State has faced a ranked opponent during its opening weekend four times in the last three years to combine for a 4-0 record. The seventh-ranked Huskers will be the highest ranked team the Seminoles have seen on opening day in school history.
This will be the first match against the Huskers since 1982. Nebraska holds the all-time series edge at 2-0.
“This is no joke for us,” junior outside hitter Nicole Walch said. “We’re excited to head out to Nebraska and show them what we have. We aren’t going to underestimate them and I can’t wait to see what we can do.”
Walch is one of three starters returning to the lineup in 2014. Last season, Walch led the Seminole attack with 447 kills, averaging 3.58 per set.
On Sunday, Florida State will play in the second match of the Showcase and face Iowa State. The Seminoles are 4-0 against the Cyclones all-time.
“This says a lot about the growth of the ACC over the past few years,” Poole said. “Teams have made runs in the NCAA Tournament and it’s a great compliment for the ACC to have a team chosen (for the showcase). We’re going to go in and do our best to represent the conference.”
