Leticia Romero is leading her Spanish team at the U20 European Championship

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Incoming Florida State women’s basketball guard Leticia Romero has given FSU fans a glimpse of her all-around talent by leading Spain to four wins in its first five games at the U20 European Championship held in Udine, Italy.

Romero, who will be eligible for collegiate competition in the 2015-16 season, is playing in her sixth consecutive worldwide basketball competition. The Las Palmas, Spain, native has led her home country to wins over France (48-42), Greece (55-38), Latvia (72-66) and the Czech Republic (70-58). Spain’s only blemish so far is a 77-69 loss to Russia in the second round on Tuesday. It was just the second loss for the three-time reigning U20 champions since 2010.

In her first five games played, the freshman standout who starred for Kansas State last season has filled up the stat sheet. Amongst a group of rosters that fill out 16 European countries, Romero ranks third with 3.8 assists per game, seventh in steals per game (1.8), 12th in two-point field goals made per game (3.8) and 16th in field goals made per game (4.4).

Romero has recorded double-figure scoring performances in four of her five games played, highlighted by a 16-point effort in Spain’s loss to Russia. The talented point guard also finished with seven assists in that contest, and recorded a seven-rebound, five-steal effort in a win over Greece on July 4th. She is averaging 10.8 points, five rebounds and 3.8 assists.

A veteran of the European Championship, Romero has enjoyed great success in one of the world’s best youth basketball tournaments. At the U18 European Championship in Croatia, she captured MVP honors and was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.7 steals. She also helped Spain to a gold medal at the U16 European Championship by averaging 9.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.0 steals.

Romero and Spain finish up the second round of the U20 European Championship on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. ET against Turkey. Both Spain and France are tied atop Group E with seven points apiece, and a Spanish win over Turkey would put it in the quarterfinals as one of the final eight teams remaining.

The quarterfinals begin on Friday, July 11, and the semifinals occur on Saturday, July 12. The championship game takes place at 2:45 p.m. on July 13.
