TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) - Florida State's most decorated pitcher in a decade has a chance to add to her résumé this summer as Lacey Waldrop was invited to the 2014 USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp scheduled for June 9-12 as announced today by The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball. If chosen to the squad following camp, Waldrop would be the first Florida State student-athlete to play for Team USA.
"Playing for your country is a great honor and I know Lacey has a great shot to become a member of the US Women's National Team," said head coach Lonni Alameda. "She represents this university so well with how well she works on and off the field and I know that she would do the same for the United States on the international level."
Waldrop, the 2014 USA Softball National Player of the Year and ACC Pitcher of the Year, is joined by Kellie Fox (Arizona), Kelsey Stewart (Florida) and Jaclyn Traina (Alabama) as recent additions to the 25-member squad chosen for the Selection Camp.
"I'm so excited to have the opportunity to try out for Team USA," said Waldrop. "I'm really looking forward to competing with and against the best players in the country, and I'm excited to continue learning the game from the team and coaches. No matter the outcome, I feel very blessed to have this opportunity."
During the five-day selection process athletes will participate in position drills as well as simulated games and be evaluated by the Women's National Team Selection Committee (WNTSC). Following camp, athletes will begin a three-city tour of exhibition games in which they will be further evaluated.
The first set of exhibition games will take place on June 13 in Lynchburg, Va. as the WNT Selection Camp athletes take on a team of local athletes who will be coached by two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Dot Richardson.
Following the Lynchburg tour stop, the WNT Selection Camp invitees will head to Findlay, Ohio where they will play in a doubleheader against a college all-star team on June 17.
The last stop of the WNT Selection Camp will take place against the Virginia All-Stars on June 19 in Purcellville, Va. Florida State's Maddie O'Brien will be a member of the all-star team and will have a chance to face off against her current teammate.
Once selected, the 17 athletes who make up the 2014 USA Softball Women's World Championship team will compete in six different events throughout United States, Canada, Italy and the Netherlands.
